What’s an Enrolled Agent?
Enrolled Agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards, and signifies a strong proficiency in both individual and business taxes. To become an Enrolled Agent, I had to pass a series of three rigorous tax exams (called the IRS Special Enrollment Examinations) and pass a suitability check conducted by the IRS. To maintain my status, I am required to complete continuing education on a yearly basis.
Beyond demonstrating a strong understanding of tax concept, being an IRS Enrolled Agent grants me unlimited practice rights before the IRS. This means that I am able to represent taxpayers during meetings with IRS agents, submit offers in compromise, and request installment agreements. I do not offer these services to the public at the moment, but would be happy to connect you with someone who does.
“An enrolled agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns, or through experience as a former IRS employee. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards”
